Understanding Coolsculpting by Zeltiq

When patients are looking to lose pockets of fat, especially around their waistline, the first method that comes to mind – other than rigorous exercise – would probably be liposuction, the surgical procedure to permanently reduce fat cells from selected areas on the body.

However, liposuction, as a surgical procedure, comes with its own risks and complications. General anaesthesia, fat embolism, scarring, surgical incisions and days of recovery time are required for patients who undergo liposuction. The procedure is not suitable for everybody, especially those with certain medical conditions or those who can’t afford to take the time off their busy schedules to go for the relatively-costly procedure.

Fortunately, with recent advancements in medical technology, Harvard scientists have invented a new way to remove fat cells, similar to what liposuction does. This new procedure, unlike liposuction, is completely non-invasive and will take a short time to complete.

The method, known as Coolsculpting, was developed over 4 years by 2 dermatologists who are affiliated with Harvard Medical School. The main scientific principle behind the treatment is that fat cells can be safely frozen and destroyed at a specific temperature without damaging the rest of the tissue in the region. The body would then, through its natural healing process, slowly and naturally absorb and remove the dead fat cells, completely removing them from those areas, a process also known as “cryolipolysis”.

During the procedure, a special applicator is used to gently pull the targeted tissue between two cooling pads, subjecting them to cold temperatures. Before that, the clinic nurses will apply a special gel pad that protects the skin from the cold. You will feel a tingly pins-and-needles sensation on the treated area, followed by a mild cooling sensation after the treated area becomes numb. The procedure takes about 1 – 2 hours, during which you can enjoy leisurely activities such as reading or watching television. The treatment is comfortable for all patients – both men and women; and you should not feel excessive pain or discomfort during the procedure at all.

Up to 25% of the fat layer underneath the skin is frozen and executed gradually over the course of 1-3 months. This is unlike liposuction, which removes fat from those areas immediately during the surgery.

Coolsculpting is generally ideal for patients who have a stubborn pocket of fat that cannot be removed even after a lifestyle change. You should be within 5 to 7 kilograms of your ideal body weight to be a good candidate for Coolsculpting. It must be borne in mind that Coolsculpting is not a substitute for a healthy diet, exercise or weight loss.

If you feel like Coolsculpting may not be for you, do check out our other fat reduction treatment, Liposonix, which uses special High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) to kill off fat cells in a similar manner.

Both Coolsculpting and Liposonix are great treatment options for those who have stubborn pockets of fat that they would like to remove. Both treatments are approved for use in aesthetic centre and are offered by EHA Clinic. Contact us at 6235 3325 today to enquire about Coolsculpting or Liposonix.
